What's Up with the Logo?

Updated: Aug 7

When we sat down to think through how to best frame what the WorthPlace Collective was all about, the choice became clear. We adopted a coin.

Few things signal the worth of a thing like the currency we use to buy and sell.

And we are not the only one's who appreciate coinage as a marker for a group's core identity. Medeival guilds often minted and distributed their own coins to their members. It was a symbol of belonging and mutual esteem. In some cases, the coin could vouch for the crafter's reliability, quality and reputation.

We hope the same for those who throw their lot in with us as well. The WorthPlace Collective intends to be a place where we learn ur doing - our work - must be born out of our being that knows its worth.

We wanted to say right up front, that worth is tangible and within our grasp to engage in trade and meaningful exchanges. With the bold imperatives minted on its face, "Know Your Worth" and "Own Your Epic Tale," we invite members to create and hold space so that we:

1. Can celebrate one another's worth, know our own worth at the deepest levels, and

2. Unfold our our own epic tale of worth.

A balanced scale is featured in the top portion of the coin face. In our examination of "worth," we found that weighing options, alternatives, cost or value often came into play. Sometimes we can only know the worth of one thing by weighing it against the relative value of another, like the value of our time compared to wages we may be paid or whether the payment is worthy of our effort invested.

It's not obvious, but the crossed garlands at the bottom, are two olive branches, the ancient symbol of peace offered and peace accepted. In the preamble of the WorthPlace Collective Pledge -- a pledge we offer all who want journey with us, as well as offer their story to ours -- we state this: "By engaging in work, we dignify it. Work cannot dignify or damn. We do not oppose economies, markets nor anyone. Instead, we cultivate a camraderie of inquiry and respite when the balance of these go awry from our own terms. We may always be a mere few who are convicted so. Yet we welcome all who take up this inquiry with us, doing so by bringing their wisdoms to our table as respected friends, colleagues and worth practitioners." In other words, we are working toward our peace in manners of worth, fighting no one, yet fighting for worthy work on our own terms.

When we are living a tale of how we made peace with our worth, we believe it will be no less than any other epic tale of have come to love and respect in our favorite stories, books and films. In this sense, worthplace practioners are protagonists in their own epic tales. We want to join you, celebrate with you, learn from you as we each go through thresholds and pathways.

That's what the coin is all about, at least the "heads" side. Question: What do you think we should place on the "tails" side of the coin? Drop your ideas in the comments section below.
